Primer (2004)

My brother tipped me off to this 2004 Sundance Grand Jury winner. Due to the nature of this film I couldn't even start a review until I watched it twice. This is going to be tricky because I don't want to give a single thing about the plot for fear of ruining it. Let's just say the movie starts off with some nerdy engineers working on inventions in their spare time in their garage. Serendipitdy strikes (not the crappy chick flick) and they are faced with some tough decisions.

This movie really appealed to the nerd in me and had me trying to work out the details for weeks. I found it to be an amazing example of what can be done with a small budget. How small you might ask? I read online somewhere that it was done for $7,000 which wouldn't even have covered Bruce Willis's bar tab for "Armageddon".

  1. I've heard good things about this movie even before your review, but now that I've gotten a recomendation from a reputable source I'll have to check it out. Heard it was an interesting sci-fci mind-f%!k which u seem to agree with. I like those. Like memento (although that wasnt sci-fce) and 12 Monkeys... i trust you've seen those Brian

When I rented Maria Full of Grace, there was a trailer for this on the DVD, and I remember how cool it looked. I had no idea what to make out of the trailer other than its visual appeal but I wanted to see more.

I did, however, forget about it since then so thanks for reminding me about it. Whenever my dad signs us up for Netflix (which I hope will be SOON!!), I'll make sure to check this out.

  3. I really liked "Memento" and Brad Pit kicks ass in "12 Monkeys". I can't wait for someone else to see this movie and give me your take.

After reading my comment, my dad finally signed up for Netflix.

Primer is getting mailed on Monday, then I'll be sure to let you know what I thought of it.

Brian, I just finished Primer and I have to say that this is definately a very unique movie. I didn't mind getting lost in the science talk at first until the last third of the movie when I got completely lost.

Despite the confusion, the film looked great with that cool low-budget feel, and it sounded great, (I toyed with my surround sound a couple days ago and I think I now have it set up perfectly) The noise the machine made was very cool and unsettling.

Overall I thought was pretty cool, just too damn confusing which took a lot away for me. I don't know if I'll have time to watch it again but hopefully I can find some reviews that will clear up all the hazy spots.

*To see something amazing, check out Shane Carruth's credits on this film: star, director, writer, producer, cinematographer, editor, composer, head of sound department, production designer, and casting director.

  7. ************SPOILERS AHEAD************

The thing that I missed is that there are several copies of the guys including at least one locked up in the attic. Each with different ideas of how things should happen and each trying to change the future. A second run through made this much clearer. It also made several things I missed the first time seem more complicated like the girls father finding a box and going back in time. That might just been a loose end but maybe not.

I'm glad you got to check it out.
