Flying Spaghetti Monster

This has nothing to do with movies but I felt it important enough to need a soap box--a little soap box that I like to refer to as Armageddon Blows. The Word of the Flying Spaghetti Monster really starting spreading after the Kansas School Board decided that evolution shouldn't be the only thing studied in science class. The alternative is called Intelligent Design, maybe you've heard of it but if not, it basically said that evolution is not responsible for the Earth as we know it but god's master plan. Keep in mind "ID" proponents insist that this has nothing to do with faith and is strictly scientific and can be supported by fact. I would be a fool to try and describe the new 3rd alternative, Flying Spaghetti Monsterism, when you can simply click on the link below.

  1. My moment of clarity was last Friday. I was standing in a field thinking about the FSM and I asked for a sign. When the wind started blowing through my blonde hair I knew I was being touched by His noodley appendage.

So yes, I am a follower.

    Hello my dearest Brian.

So I got a chance to look through the FSM website. If there is one thing christians lack it is humor and specifically satire and sarcasm.

As you know (for better or worse) I do consider myself a follower of Jesus. You also know that I disagree with much of what passes as 'christian' and 'religious'. Fundamentalism, especially that which makes up the Religious Right, I consider a perversion of the truth of the bible. Jesus is not a republican (or a democrat for that matter).

On the subject of Int.Design (ID) I really have mixed feelings. I do not believe that God can or should be 'proven'. Following God as revealed in Jesus is based on faith not fact. Those who try to 'prove' their beliefs are really not excerizing true faith. I believe God is real and can be found by those who truely and diligently seek him. Shoving science down someone nose as a guise for faith really creates a polarity which need not exist.

Let me also say that evolution and faith are not necessarily opposites. Let me repeat, one can fully believe in the God of the bible and also believe that he used evolutionary means to create the universe. Fundamentalist christians who disagree with me not only take the bible out of context and read into it their own opinions of things, but also attempt to make the bible into a scientific textbook rather than a spiritual textbook.

As far as I know the original proponents of ID (Johnson, Behe, etc) are extremely legit scientists, and though they are believers, they are not fundamentalists. It is unfortunate that the fundys have taken over the original claims.

As far as I know ID really just says that the mass of acedemic and scientific information and facts we have points toward a design and an orderlyness to the universe and laws of nature. In this way even evolution exibits design and orderlyness, not to mention cell metabolism, physics, mathematics, chemistry, etc. Let me be clear, this does not prove anything, it simply asserts that faith in a God/Intelligent Designer are not incompatible with science. One can agree with all the mainstream science and also attribute that science to a Designer.

If I see a watch on the ground outside my apartment, personally I will assume it has been designed by someone or something inteligent. In the same way if I see a tree and an ecosystem or the periodic table of elements, I might reach the same conclusion. While I admit this proves nothing, I still have a personal faith that an Intelligent Being is behind the natural processes that I see everyday in the universe.

Let me know your thoughts. And let me reassure you a great sin of christians is their lack of humor. thanks for the FSM website tip.

  3. Matt,

I guess I never even considered combining religion with humor. Seems like one doesn't belong in the other. FSMish aside I also don't understand why ID and evolution have to be different to the point of choosing one. They seem like two names for the same thing to me.

    PS Happy Birthday!
